Tame the Monkey, Be Happy

Just as a monkey swinging through the trees grab one branch and let it go only to seize another, so to, that which is called thought, mind or consciousness arises and disappear continually both day and night

Things to do in Gili islands

Gili islands has clear sea water, the visibility is around 20m and warm, most beach around Gili islands is shallow around 5 meter deep, then if you swim out for 20 meter it will drop from 5 to 30 meter deep. With this condition there is diving spot all around Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, with vary dept and condition, some area may best for scuba diving, some for freediving or snorkeling.

MDR Mammalian Dive Reflex

After a while, CO2 in the body will cause Splenic Contraction to active; the the pressure will cause Blood shift to active. So totally there is 3 triggers that will activate all 4 MDR, the receptors within the nasal cavity, CO2 and water pressure.

What can you do if you got stung by jellyfish?

Some jellyfish have season. Their number increases during a certain time. In Indonesia jellyfish season usually happen in September during seasonal change from dry season to rainy season.

Tame the Monkey, be Happy

Try to close our eyes and stay still do nothing, for one minute… nothing happened. Try to add more time, for 5 minute… maybe for some people, still nothing happened. But for most people, start to feel bore. Then if we add more time, lets say 15 minute, bore become anger, and if we still doesn’t move it will become rage, and then become hate.

Why is it hard just to stay still? Its easy isn’t it?

"Just as a monkey swinging through the trees grab one branch and let it go only to seize another, so to, that which is called thought, mind or consciousness arises and disappear continually both day and night”

Since we are born, we never told to look inside, to check what happened inside us / our mind. Our mind is like untamed monkey, that always jumping from one tree to another, always craving for more, restless, careless. We must always feed this monkey with pleasure, pleasure from our senses; ears, mouth, eyes, skin, and even from our own mind (we can imagine things), if we stop feeding this monkey it will go crazy. This is why we feel bore, then anger, then rage then we will hate the whole “stay still” situation. Lets go back and check,

Sit down, relax, close our eyes and stay still do nothing, for one minute… nothing happened (nothing major happened, but actually something happened) . Then after 1 minute, don’t quit stay some more, and see our mind wandering thinking about the past, then go to the future, and then go back to the past, and after we bored with that, we will day dreaming, all of that happened. Then at some point, we start feeling bore, (the monkey want more), but stay still…

Then hate come, we feel heat on our chest… the monkey in rage, our mind in rage.

What we don’t realize is that, this whole “untamed monkey” thing is not only happened when we stay still. It happened all the time, every time. In daily activity our mind also jumping from thinking about the past, the future, day dreaming, thinking about person we like, something we love, we hate, we don’t like and so on… As a result, its nearly impossible to slow down and enjoy the present, focus on thing that really giving happiness, concentrate to what is important, happiness.

mindfulness,bali,meditation,balinest,holiday,retreat

Tame the Monkey, and be happy. Try to sit down, again, relax, close our eyes and stay still do nothing, try to feel your breathing, inhale…exhale…be conscious about the whole process, from the beginning of our inhale, turn to exhale, the beginning of our exhale, and continue. The same thing would happened, our mind will start to wandering to the past, to the future or day dreaming, and we lost focus on the breathing (this is normal), now when we conscious about this, train our mind / train the Monkey, take it back to the breathing, be conscious about the breathing. Do this over and over, anger will still come, hate will still come, but as we practice, we will notice the duration will extend, our mind start to enjoy the peaceful moment; the untamed monkey become peaceful monkey.
As we practice, on our daily activities, we will realize that some time we will automatically  stop from what ever thinking we do for a few moment, then on that moment, we would able to choose between enjoy the present, positive thinking then happy feeling blooming; the untamed monkey become peaceful monkey.

Please remember, meditation is a practice, a training. Don’t hope for an instant result J
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In contrast to this, the Buddha asked his disciples to train themselves so as to develop ‘a mind like a forest deer’ Deer are particularly gentle creatures and always remain alert and aware no matter what they are doing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the sample, all of them using hate / anger, but its not just about hate and anger, it used because those are the most significant feeling arise on meditation practice. There is fear, sadness, even happiness, joy, etc. Its actually about “Feeling” (vedana in Sanskrit) – refer to only the mental separation of perception into pleasant, unpleasant and neutral (nothing more). -- but this is deep deep deep :)

Just an Introduction to Mindfulness (Balinest)

Background :
First of all before we start, i want to share the background of Balinest : Mindfulness, why we decided to add this division on Balinest, other then Balinest : Underwater.

Maybe its luck, karma or gods will - i feel so blessed to have a father with strong Buddhist knowledge and meditator. His name is Franky Dhammanatha, well know in Bali's Buddhist community and meditator, you could contact him at his Facebook here. Any way if you interested on more serious meditation retreat // Vipassana Meditation you might interested on practicing at Brahmavihara Arama in Banjar, Singaraja, North Bali, here is the 2016 schedule...

I grow up practicing meditation and hearing lots of spiritual chat and discussion, but it doesnt mean that iam an expert. With Balinest : Mindfulness i want to share this knowledge, meet with others with same interest, practice together and making progress together.

Mindfulness :
The word Mindfulness means maintaining a moment by moment awareness of our mind, body and surrounding environment, and accept anything that happend without judging if its good or bad, like or dislike.

Though Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist meditation, here in Balinest we dont just about Buddhist meditation, we embrace anything, any practice that would bring happiness - but still similar or relate to mindfulness... it could about yoga, meditation, being kind, doing good deeds, healthy food, etc.

May All Being be Happy, and Freedive

Seniman Coffee Studio

For a fine Balinese and Mediterranean dishes, I have recommend the famous Casa Luna, but if you looking for place to just relax accompanied by good coffee and nice vibe, slow music and nice friendly waiters you could just walk a little more from Casa Luna to Seniman Coffee Studio.

At Seniman Coffee Studio they use single-origin coffee beans from plantation around Indonesia such as Bali, Java, Sumatra and Papua. The beans are roasted on site, and you can choose from dark, medium and light roast. The coffee and presentation is great there at Seniman, me and brother order a cappuccino and ice coffee and we love both of them.

Each coffee order is prepared by hand, either by pouring the coffee through a special siphon or hand pulling the brew. The chair is plastic chair modified into rocky-chair, it just add the comfort to the place, so easy to spend hours at Seniman Coffee Studio.

Good coffee, good presentation, nice vibe, friendly waiters, good internet connection, comfortable rocky-chair. Seniman Coffee Studio is the best place to get coffee in Ubud :)

Check out their Facebook, and Website here (they have workshop and cool recycle product)

Seniman Coffee Studio open from 08.00 AM till 19.00 PM, located at Jl. Sriwedari, Ubud (0361 – 972 085). Below is the map to go there

Angelita tea salon & pattiseries

On this long holiday season in Indonesia, I decide to review several place for good healthy food and place with nice vibe, hangout spot. One of the spot that we found is Angelita tea salon and pattiseries located in Seminyak.

From outside, the place look simple and just like a regular restaurant, only after entering the place then I immediately fall in love with the place, remind me of “Alice in wonderland” movie, so shabby chic, Parisian look-a-like. Angelita tea salon & pattiseries mainly doing French pattiseries and bakery. It cozy, colorful and petite; with friendly attendant; tasty bread, cake and tea.

I visit Angelita’s together with my mom and brother, and I would recommend this place for hangout in this place with friends and family to share love and having quality time. Angelita’s open at 09.00 AM till 22.00 PM, the address is :
